Thanks to 150 volunteers and all of our supporters the 8th annual KBB "Trash Off" and lst annual "River Cleanup" held on April 14 was a big success. The Church of Christ team, led by Sylvia Romero and Laura McClinton, with 17 volunteers cleaned Town Creek and some of the city easements. They collected 1731 pounds of litter and trash. The gift basket valued at $300.00 was awarded to this team.
The BISD middle school team, was led by Pam Meier and Donna Ashley and had 54 student volunteers. Mr. Mike and his volunteers from the elementary school and Keith Beck and his volunteers from First Baptist Church joined forces with the middle school. They had the largest area to clean and did a great job.
Charlene and Raymond Singleton joined us for their 10th time to lead their team of 8 in the Pittsburg area and around the cemetery. This year Super S and the shopping center were added so their team did a lot of walking and left it litter free for a few hours.
Wayne and Martha Gosnell led the River Cleanup with Dr. Weaver and his boyscout troop #473. The scouts had 20 volunteers counting parents. They launched their canoes and kayaks below the Wayne Smith Dam and collected litter out of the river and off of the banks all the way to the dam at the city water plant. It was a cold day and a Dad wound up wet and shivering after a canoe overturned.
James and Pam Whitworth worked with the 9 volunteers from the BISD High School Ag Department. The boys launched their canoes below the dam at the water plant and cleaned to Hwy 165. There were some cold, wet students when a canoe overturned. Other volunteers joined Pam on the banks to pick up litter to Hwy 165.
The city employees were hard at work at the city yard on Jones Road. They directed approximately 100 vehicles to the areas where they needed to unload their pickups and trailers. Six 30 yards dumpsters were filled. A large pile of limbs was left. There were piles of recyclable items and several hundred pounds of recyclable metal. The metal was taken to a center to be sold and the funds went into a city account.
The KBB volunteers were busy setting up and running the center at the courthouse. We started our morning with the delicious breakfast tacos that were donated by the Sunset Restaurant. Beverly Burris, from city hall, checked the new people in and Tom Philips was in charge of distributing the t-shirts. Rebecca supervised the preparation of the meal. Glenn Page was our hotdog cook this year which was served with Pat Granberg's delicious chili. Lorie Stetler helped serve the food and made trips to buy more when we ran short. We all enjoyed Dorothy Troppy's famous cake donated by Rebecca. Glenn Johnson, Charles Wilgren and I were the errand team to see that all was running smoothly and to make sure we got pictures of all of the events and groups. Judy Dorsett always gets the tough chore of wrap-up and clean-up
Let's all make a pledge not to litter. If you are out for a stroll you may want to take a trash bag with you and pick up any litter you find on our streets. Everyday can be a trash off day!!
