Keeping Blanco Beautiful

On Monday Glenn Page and city councilwoman, Rebecca Howerton, spent 2 1/2 hours picking up trash and litter off of 13th street, Mesquite and parts of Garden Oaks. They collected four full bags.

Our "trash off" was held on April 14 and some of this was litter that was missed and some new. They found all sorts of interesting items and felt rewarded when they found an old quarter!

Being a litter free Blanco will take a lot of work on the citizens part. A good place to learn not to litter is in the home Our Waste in Place curriculum will teach young people from kindergarten to 8th grade environment issues and will encourage them not to litter. Statistics show that the age group from 15 to 25 are the worse violators.

The Great American Cleanup program put out a community improvement check list. The City of Blanco and its administration are very important components of a successful environmental program. Their opinions on this
checklist are important.

The questions covered the catogories "In General", "Streets/Sidewalks", Parks, Playgrounds, Tourist Stops, "School and Church Grounds" "Business Areas" "Cemeteries" "Homes/Neighborhoods", "Vacant Lots" and "Disposal Areas".

We had hoped the survey would be completed by our candidates for mayor and city council. Only Al Turner and Pam Capps have returned theirs.

The Great American Cleanup runs to May 31. We will cover some of these questions in futures articles. If you would like to tell our city government how you feel about these catagories please fill this survey out. Call Retta Martin 833-4720 for a copy.

We will tally the results and turn it in to city hall.
