Let's Clean Up Hazardous Materials

Retta Martin and Judy Dorsett

The Great American Cleanup starts March 1 and ends May 31. We want to encourage the citizens of Blanco and Blanco County to participate in the various programs.

Do you know what hazardous waste is?
Did you know that hazardous materials require greater care when disposing of them?

Help protect our groundwater! Don't throw those used car batteries in the garbage or set them on the ground. They're hazardous.

Car batteries leak battery acid as they corrode and that can't be good news for our ground water. But batteries are only one of many hazardous materials that find their way into our landfills, backyards, and even sides of roads.

Old car tires left laying about, besides being unsightly, can be fire hazards and are breeding grounds for mesquitos.
In fact, any item that is ignitable, corrosive, or toxic (used motor oil, oil-based paint, auto batteries, gasoline,
pesticides and electronics) is considered hazardous.

So, clean out those garages, storage units, and yards, unburden yourself of your hazardous waste, because I know where you can drop them off safely. And don't forget all of those electronics that you don't have laying around
because you haven't known how to get rid of them!

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

LCRA is sponsoring a Household Hazardous Waste Collection on March 31 at the Blanco County Sub Station in Johnson City from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The goal is to dispose of and recycle Blanco County's hazardous materials.

LCRA developed the Resuable Materials Collection and Education Program to help develop awareness about proper management of home chemicals and products disposal. The program provides information about proper care and safe handling of hazardous materials. Education is crucial to helping communities and neighborhoods understand what a threat toxic waste can be.

Most people do not know that latex paints, antifreeze, motor oil, filters, and tires are reusable or can be recycled.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection programs are good opportunities for individuals, businesses, and local government to work together to enhance a communities environment and economic vitality.

Preventing toxic household chemicals from contaminating our water resources is important to our quality of life and growth along the river. Volunteers will be needed to help make this a success.

Don't forget April 14 will be the 8th annual KBB trash off in Blanco and every Tuesday morning is KBB beautification around Historic Downtown Blanco.
