Blanco Cemetery Sesquicentennial Proclamation City of Blanco, Texas
Whereas, Blanco Cemetery was established in 1856 by Captain James Hughes Callahan, who led the settling of the Blanco area; Callahan's family, and his friend William "Maulheel" Johnson were the fIrst to be buried in that location; andWhereas, Blanco Cemetery has served as the city's cemetery for 150 years, and still continues to do so, and is a testament to the people who settled this area, fought for our country, and have given the City of Blanco the rich heritage it enjoys today; and Whereas, it is estimated that over 2000 people are interred in Blanco Cemetery, approximately 40 of whom are Civil War veterans, 6 of whom are Republic of Texas veterans, and numerous more of whom have fought for our country in later wars; and Whereas, caring for the cemetery has.been, since at least 1898, the work of the citizens of the City of Blanco; and Whereas, many who live in the City of Blanco today are descendants of those buried in Blanco Cemetery, and carry in their hearts memories of grandparents, parents, siblings, children, and extended family, and in their minds the stories passed down their family line; and Whereas, for all the above reasons, the City wishes to honor the lives and works of those buried in Blanco Cemetery and to pass the collective history of our City to the younger generations. Now, therefore, be it proclaimed, that in honor of those buried at the Blanco Cemetery and as a place of contemplation and remembrance, the Mayor, City Council, the Blanco Historic Preservation Commission, and the citizens of the City of Blanco hereby proclaim September 16, 2006, Blanco Cemetery Sesquicentennial Celebration Day. All citizens are urged to participate in the activities planned for observance of this day. Jim Rodrigue, Mayor
