How I Came to Build
a Website about
Blanco, Texas

When I first thought about building this website, I came to realize several key points about our rural community:

The infrastructure of Blanco is about 95 percent volunteer-driven (it's probably similar in other small towns).

Our little burg is growing so fast that people don't seem to know each other like they used to.

New folks moving in from the City (accustomed to certain services normally provided by tax-supported entities) may not realize that the same volunteers are giving their time and energy (like they probably have for the past 27 years) to make sure Blanconians get needed services, and their pet projects are accomplished.

[That's how our fantastic Library got started, you know... the Women's Club]

Our volunteer forces are just having to work harder now, because there are more people to serve.

I want all this grass-roots involvement to continue... and to flourish.

And with the Internet's popularity for information gathering (what did we DO before the Web?), I figured these little groups need some online representation.

Let's not only get these gals some help, we can put out the word of all that's going on here; and get some more participation!

And so.... Blanco-Texas.com was born.

I am an amateur - don't get me wrong - but I had already built a couple of websites using my favorite website-building software.

It was easy enough to start another one, I just had to gather the information, and load 'er up!

Didn't get much chance to work on my site the first month, so imagine my surprise when I discovered my Alexa rating was in the in the 6,900,000 range. Out of 53 million sites on the internet, I figured that wasn't so bad.

By the end of the third month (I had had some time to get some more pages up by then), I was paying more attention to that Alexa toolbar.

My ranking number just kept getting smaller! (that's a good thing, by the way)

1,660,947... and counting.

And my traffic has been growing steadily. Who would have thought that people around the world would be interested in Blanco, Texas?

But they're finding my little website.

I know because my software package has lots of nifty tools, including traffic and search engine rankings (there's way more than just that, believe me, and it's all gathered into one convenient location. Makes it easier for someone like me who doesn't have a lot of experience).

By sharing your knowlege and expertise, you do the world a service.

And who knows? you could create a nice stream of income. Not "get-rich-quick," but a good, solid, work-from-home business.
